"Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Nations and peoples who forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms."
Robert A. Heinlein

And here I thought war never solved anything!
Undoubtedly violence has solved a great many things, but in terms of numbers, violence isn't even close to the free market in settling issues.
And at that, I'd say the free market actually prevents more issues than it's settled. But I guess it depends on how you define 'issues'.
I've never liked the "violence never solves anything" line. It's demonstrably false.
"Violence never solves anything" is also simply demonstrably not true. Any kid who has beaten up a bully and seen the bully run away has seen that violence does solve problems in many cases. It's the "careful application of violence" that really solves these problems. A bomb on the body politic, and the people will forgive you. An indiscriminate nuke on their capitol and you'll offend the nation itself and they'll want war.
Yeah, like WWII wasn't violent.
Sad, but true.
I'd rather live my days in peace, but I know in my heart that it will likely not be the case.
