Jackass-Watching Men Shine Women On, Study Finds

How'd you like to be a female participant in this study?
[R]esearchers recruited 10 men and taped absorbent pads under their armpits while they watched 25-minute videos taken from The Shining and Jackass, on separate occasions. The pads were chopped up and placed in bottles, with each bottle containing samples from four men collected under either the "fear" condition or the "disgust" condition. When the women, who had not been told where the samples camefrom, were exposed to "fear" sweat they opened their eyes more widely - an expression of fear. In contrast, the "disgust" condition prompted them to adopt a corresponding facial expression by lowering their eyebrows and wrinkling their noses.

[Dr. Guen Semin of Utrecht University said,] "Importantly, the women were not aware of these effects and there was no relationship between the effects observed and how pleasant or intense the women judged the stimuli to be." The findings may explain the "emotional contagion" which is known to spread among heavy crowds, he added.

When exposed to bottled sweat given off by men as they watched clips from the thriller "The Shining", women began showing physical signs of being afraid such as a fearful facial expression, darting eye movements and heavier sniffing. In contrast, the smell of perspiration from men who had been watching MTV's Jackass - which features stomach-churning stunts - caused a disgusted facial expression and other signs of the emotion including a reduction in eye movement and sniffing.

The findings suggest that certain emotions can be contagious and can be detected via chemical signals, even though the women were not aware of it at the time, researchers said.

Researches chose to study the effect of men's sweat on women because men have been shown to release more chemical signs when they perspire, while women are more sensitive to the signals.
This study is intriguing in many ways. First, that the old wisdom that claims "people may be smart, crowds/herds are stupid", is true.

Second, that the mechanism of female sexual attraction is complex with many interrelated variables, and is not well understood. Thus what is known as the "tingle" is the end result of the interplay of many factors, not the least of which are scent cues given off by men...whether men know it or not, whether women realize it or not.

Third, these factors work at an unconscious level, meaning that not only are men not able to directly able to influence their stink, but that women are not very likely to be at all aware that these olfactory clues are hard at work on her amygdala, turning her "on" to a particular fellow and "off" to another. Curious also to consider that men with more "alpha" traits (social dominance, resource-rich, pre-selection effects, etc) are likely to experience/exude less fear and disgust, and therefore be more (unconsciously) attractive to the women in their midst--while the more fearful and less dominant men are not.

Fourth, that emotions really are contagious, and that positivity truly does beget positivity, while the converse seems true as well.

The PUA set has a lot to be happy about in this study, for it reinforces what they've anecdotally observed to be true...that teaching men to be more confident/cocky in social situations reduces their fear of rejection and apprehension, and therefore the pheromones they emit.

that conclusion does not follow from the evidence, nor is it supported by the evidence -- it's simply the conclusion you wished to find, to flatter your pals

what the study does suggest, however, is that human females respond collectively, and unconsciously, to even slight signals from male scent

if you think that "widening of the eyes" when smelling sweat = turn off, then go back to PUA Community College

the study also helps explain (as if more explanation is needed) that women behave in herd fashion, and that b/c their responses are so uniform, and so unconscious, it is a simple matter to construct a Gyno-Gulag like the US that is controlled by that fear/herd impulse, often beneath conscious control

with females innundated constantly with fear-messages from their culture (telling them theyre at-risk, that rapists are everywhere, that they are oppressed and injured and downtrodden etc) in fact stimulates women, which is why they flock to "dangerous" entertainment programming, in which another female (ie themselves, as herd member) is in terrible danger, and must be saved by White Knight Nation

romantic novels, same game

it's thus extremely simple to control the culture thru the female herd/fear trigger via propaganda -- as this study shows, females are already constantly primed to "be afraid" merely in the presence of any random male, regardless of his intention or interest in her

it's not PUAs that profit from that fear, it's satan and his gynarchy, to the great diminishment of fatherhood and masculinity

teaching young men to be better sexual-trollers in such a culture is irresponisble, at minimum

Got to agree with ray here, it does show women naturally bred to follow.

I wonder what happens in reverse?

If a man smells a woman's fear, does he magically grow a Superman costume over his skin?

Your opinion of course. And I'm no "pal" of PUAs...rather, I recognize that certain truths have been outed by Game practicioners and this study tends to reinforce some of their tenets. I usually find most PUA behavior reprehensible.

" it does show women naturally bred to follow"

Yeah, I mentioned the same to Mrs. Wapiti while writing this post. Definitely not a takeaway that some of the more "independent" womyn types will cotton to very well.

What was particularly fascinating for me from reading the article was that the researchers found that the sweat/stink mechanism works only one way, from male to female.

"If a man smells a woman's fear, does he magically grow a Superman costume over his skin?"

Or any other of his WK costumes.

Suz at Shining Pearls of Something had a link to a similar experiment, only it was men's sweat collected during arousal.

Same thing happened there.

I've often considered this idea without this frame before - especially in light of Song of Songs when the Bride encourages the young women not to awaken love before it is time.

From mere observation, the most successful relationships around me were those pursued by the man. Not the ones where the woman was attracted to a certain guy and was bent on getting him to notice or commit to her.

Like a woman could be just about happy with ANYONE if she put her mind to it (and stopped listening to the garbage of the world), but a man needs to be invested in the relationship for it to succeed.

This experiment seemed to confirm that idea to me.

I've observed the same. The most successful relationships are the ones where the fellow initiated...and the woman followed.

Really, the relationship needs to be the man's idea. If he's reluctant or ambivalent, pushing him into a relationship / marriage is a risky marital strategy.
